POSITION REQUIREMENTS St. Josephs has opened a new intensive care unit that will be strictly dedicated to caring for congenital heart patients. Because these patients often require multiple hospital visits and surgeries, the new Pediatric Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (Pediatric CTICU) will be devoted to caring for congenital heart patients throughout their stay at the hospital. Believed to be the first unit of its kind in the country, patients will stay in the unit from the time they are admitted until the time they are discharged. The Pediatric CTICUs mission is to provide the best medical care for children with congenital heart disease by incorporating the principles of continuity of care, dedicated specialized care, family-centered care and patient safety. The new 24-bed unit will contain state-of-the-art medical equipment in a family friendly atmosphere. It features all private rooms, a family lounge, child life center, multi-media conference room, three nurses stations and several other amenities. It will be staffed by 42 specially trained nurses, five cardiac intensivists, five pediatric cardiologists and two surgeons. Congenital heart patients from infants to adolescents to young adults will receive care here. Our primary care structure reflects a commitment to continuity of care. DescriptionPhoenix Children´s Hospital is the only specialty children´s hospital in Arizona and it is poised to become one of the foremost pediatric hospitals in the nation. The hospital is home to the states largest group of pediatric specialists and sub-specialists. In addition, the hospital continues to evolve its clinical practices and is working with leading local and national research partners to uncover new breakthroughs in pediatric medicine. Currently a 345 bed facility, new construction plans were unveiled in October 2006 that include the building of two new patient bed towers and expansion in bed capacity and other key programs and services over the course of the next several years. Primary Purpose: In collaboration with the healthcare team, patient, and family, promotes patient health through delivery of professional nursing care appropriate to patients age and condition as documented in the nursing and medical plans of care in accordance with evidence-based nursing and patient care practice standards and hospital goals, values, and standards. Work Environment and Physical Demands: Work activities are performed in an environmentally controlled nursing unit subject to extended periods of walking and standing. Work activities involve potentially frequent exposure to blood and other high risk body fluids, communicable diseases, hazardous materials, chemicals, and waste. Activities also include, but are not limited to, bending, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing and/or pulling equipment up to 10 pounds, and lifting equipment and/or supplies up to 25 pounds. Regularly required to lift and position infant, toddler, school age, adolescent, and adult patients in the delivery of therapeutic care. Regularly required to use fine motor skills to manipulate and/or maintain equipment and perform procedures. Requires visual acuity, including normal color vision, and manual dexterity to use desktop computer equipment, telecommunications equipment, analytical instruments, and other equipment. Must communicate clearly in English. Requires the ability to speak, write, see, and hear to perform essential duties of the job. The PICU/CICU is a 31-bed quaternary care referral center for 4 states that cares for patients from newborns up to young adults. The PICU patients have a number of interesting conditions including septic shock, solid organ transplant (liver, intestine, and kidney), advanced bone marrow transplant, neurosurgery and other pediatric surgeries. Specialized care provided in the PICU includes ECMO/ECLS (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation/Extracorporeal Life support), continuous renal replacement therapy, liver dialysis, nitric oxide and ICP monitoring. The CICU patients, ranging in age from newborn to 21 years, have complex congenital defects requiring surgery, cardiology and/or cardiac transplant care. Specialized care provided in the CICU includes ECMO/ECLS, continuous renal replacement therapy, nitric oxide, ventricular assist devices, opens chest procedure and temporary pacemakers. The PICU and CICU have an all RN staff that work closely with respiratory therapists, nutritionists, social workers, pharmacists and physicians to care for these critically ill children. The physical environment is made of mostly single rooms with a parent space (including a place to sleep in the room) that allows families to be present and partner in the care of their child. A minimum of one year of med/surg pediatrics, neonatal pediatrics or adult/peds ICU experience is required for either PICU or CICU. Current BLS (American Heart Association Health Care Provider, American Safety and Health Institution Professional Level or American AED/CPR Association - Professional Rescuer) and ability to perform CPR are required. Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) is mandatory within 90 days of hire and must be maintained as current thereafter. PICU experience is preferred.
