Nurse Manager-R1-Cardiothoracic Department: R1-Cardiothoracic Schedule: Full Time Shift: First Shift (Day) Hours: 40 Job Details: SUMMARY OF POSITION DESCRIPTION: Leadership experience preferredThe Nurse Manager in collaboration with the Nursing Director is the vital link between the mission and vision of Maine Medical Center and the delivery of safe patient and family centered care that is compassionate, evidence-based, and provides highest quality care. Reporting through the Nursing Director, this role requires collaboration with staff, physicians, directors, other professional colleagues and occasionally senior administration, to meet the diverse and continually changing challenges of the health care environment. The Nurse Manager must be a creative, autonomous, future-oriented, risk-taking entrepreneur who applies nursing expertise, critical thinking, and effective leadership and management skills to ensure that quality care is provided through satisfied and inspired professionals on a daily basis. MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 1. Requires current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maine. 2. Graduate of an accredited program for nursing. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred. 3. Requires interpersonal and management skills in order to deal with complex management problems. Communicates effectively with unit and administrative personnel, physicians, a variety of other hospital staff and persons within the community. 4. Requires advanced knowledge and expertise in providing care in order to oversee others and serve as effective resource at a level normally acquired through two or three years of progressive experience. 5. Requires a high level of critical thinking and analytical skills to make management decisions at unit level and make recommendations for consideration on departmental issues. 6. Requires the ability to integrate the knowledge of teaching principles and counseling techniques in order to direct the growth of the unit staff. 7. Requires a high level of organization skills, effective time management and delegation strategies that include the ability to rapidly prioritize and adjust work flow according to changing unit needs.

SALARY: $6961 - $8498 Approximate Monthly Equivalent; Paid Biweekly.5% additional pay for evening shift work; 7 % additional pay for night shift work. Qualifying experience must be attained within the past five (5) years.ORFive (5) years of hospital experience as a Registered Nurse, including one (1) year in a charge nurse or leadership role for a specific function, e.g., education, safety, quality management, research and/or policy development. Qualifying experience must be attained within the past seven (7) years.Depending on assignment incumbents may be required to possess and maintain specific certificates of competency as a condition of employment.Possession and maintenance of a current American Heart Association HealthcareProvider Basic Life Support (BLS) card. Appointees not possessing the BLS card must successfully complete appropriate training and qualify for the BLS card within 60 days of employment.Bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.Examination components for promotional testing will be administered during the scheduled date(s)/time(s)/location without exception.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Interprets hospital policies and procedures for staff and monitors compliance; ensures that nursing units operate in a manner consistent with policies of the Nursing Department and Kern Medical Center. Serves as a resource for hospital staff and as a clinical resource for nursing staff in providing nursing care to patients; advises Nursing Unit Managers on significant issues, concerns and occurrences on the unit. Works closely with members of the medical staff to facilitate inter-departmental communication and problem-solving. Evaluates staffing needs on each unit and adjusts staff assignments hospital-wide as required to meet changing need; assists in evaluation of staff and may recommend disciplinary action. Performs patient care in emergency situations as required. Serves as the Medical Centers representative with visitors, other providers, media representatives and the general public. May serve on Nursing Department committees or hospital-wide committees. Dependent upon area of practice or department assignments, demonstrates clinical knowledge and skill in the care of the newborn, infant, toddler, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient ranging up to 100+ years of age.Other Functions: Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Incumbents must have the ability to perform the Essential Functions of the job.APPRAISAL (Weight 100%): of training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the work based on any combination of the following: Investigation, oral exam and rating of application.
