HOURS AND DAYS WILL BE ASSIGNED TO MEET THE OPERATIONAL NEEDS OF THE DEPARTMENT PER BARGAINING UNION CONTRACT. Education/Certification/Licensure: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. MSN required. Completion of an accredited RN First Assistant training program. CA BRN RN License, Furnishing License, CA BRN Certification as a NP RNFA certificate. National Certification from a national certifying body recognized by Kaiser Permanente and the Board of Registered Nursing (AANP, ANCC, NCBPNPN, NCC). BLS Certification is required. DEA certification for Schedule II-V medications. Qualifications: A minimum of 2 years acute care experience as an RNFA required with direct OR or 1st assistance experience A minimum of 1 year NP experience in the in-patient setting preferred Demonstrated effective human relation skills are required. Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills are required. Demonstrated clinical expertise in area of specialty is required. Experience in managing surgical disorder Demonstrated ability to provide first assistance to primary surgeon in OR Experience with invasive procedures, i.e. providing exposure, handling and/or cutting tissue, suturing and suture removal and wound debridement. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team to include MDs, RNs, LVNs, Medical and Nursing Assistants, OR technicians, CRNAs and Clerical Staff required. Demonstrated excellent attendance in previous position. NPI number or NPI eligible to obtain before hire Skills Testing: N/A Duties: The Nurse Practitioner First Assistant (NP FA) works in collaboration primarily with surgeons as well as support staff to provide specific functions in the role of First Assistant for the Perioperative Services Department in accordance with the purpose, philosophy and objectives of the services. During the intraoperative phase, the NP FA practices at the direction of the surgeon. This individual will work primarily within the Perioperative Services Department and be assigned cases by the Supervising Physician or his designee. The position reports to the Director of Surgical Specialties, as well as the P.O.R.D. The NP FA collaborates with the Perioperative Services staff as well as the surgeons to support overall clinical functions in the Perioperative Services Department as determined by the Chief of Surgery. The Intraoperative surgical first-assisting, includes but is not limited to using: Access and evaluate pre- and post-operative surgical patients Ordering diagnostic tests and interpreting deviation from normal Generate history and physical from complete interivew and examination Using instruments/medical devices Providing exposure Handling and/or cutting tissue Providing hemostasis and Suturing Provides NP FA Responsibilities for surgeons within the Perioperative Services Department: Assists in setting up surgical cases as well as the maintenance of surgical equipment Acts as Surgical First Assistant per scope of practice of that role Assists in setting up and operating complex surgical equipment to support the cases Participates in TIME OUT for all surgical cases Assists in the transport of the surgical patient Supports room clean up and turn over for cases that they have been assigned to and others as appropriate and time allows Completes other Perioperative tasks as assigned as appropriate.
