Location: University Med Ctr at Brack Full/Part: Full-Time Responsibilities 1. Performs concurrent and retrospective review of the medical record utilizing established trauma guidelines and audit indicators. Identifies areas for improvement in patient care, process, or system- related issues. Facilitates effective implementation of the Performance Improvement Patient Safety (PIPS) and Trauma Physician Peer Review process. 2. Identifies opportunities for improvement in the care of the trauma patient through concurrent patient rounds, retrospective review of the medical record, multidisciplinary patient rounds, and discussions with physicians, nurses, ancillary staff, patients, and their families. Participates in PIPS teams in response to significant patient care trends and trauma systems issues. Provides and coordinates analysis of patient care and physician trends utilizing applicable software. 3. Prepares patient care summary for trauma physician review and Trauma Peer Review Committee (TPRC). Coordinates and supports the process for physician peer review and documents outcomes and loop closure in the Outcomes program. Tracks all patient care and system issues until loop closure. Maintains appropriate documentation for verification by the American College of Surgeons. Prepares the summary report to the Medical Executive Committee of cases reviewed during the TPRC. 4. Provides clinical expertise and collaborates with physicians, nurses, pre-hospital providers, specialty services, ancillary services, administration, and agencies within the trauma service area to facilitate optimal care of the trauma patient. Provides feedback to health care providers from EMS and referring hospitals regarding patient care and trauma system issues. Participates and assists in the development of trauma guidelines and patient care indicators. Assists in trauma/emergency related education and in-service programs. 5. Assists in data entry into applicable software; participates in the process to review and update trauma registry software programs that will support PIPS activities. 6. Regularly attends monthly acute care staff meetings, Trauma PI Committee, and Trauma Physician Peer Review Committee. Represents Trauma Services at appropriate meetings for related PIPS teams. Actively participates as a collaborative member of the Trauma Services team. Minimum Qualifications Bachelors degree preferred (BSN). Five (5) years experience as registered nurse to include at least one year experience in trauma, critical care, and/or the emergency department is required. Current Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in the state of Texas is required.
