Candidate should be an experienced physician executive and health care administrator with strong communication and leadership skills. Must be experienced in and capable of functioning in the academic arena. The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas, (UTHSCSA) is the primary academic affiliate of STVHCS. Members of the faculty of UTHSCSA share clinical assignments at STVHCS, and contribute to the didactic as well as the clinical training of medical students and residents. Should demonstrate capability to enhance research activities at STVHCS. Candidate should have experience in developing projects with facility-wide impact and seeing them through to completion and implementation. The candidate is expected to meet clinical performance measure goals while utilizing the most cost-efficient methodology. Experience managing a substantial budget and personnel resources is highly desirable. The incumbent will work as a member of the senior management team, which is responsible for overall leadership, policy, planning, budget, operations, and performance of the organization. The incumbent must have the ability to build and sustain relationships, resolve conflicts, handle negotiations and develop collaborative working relationships with community leaders, Congressional Offices and other VA health care systems. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: 1. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.)2. Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:(a) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.(b) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.(c) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.3. Licensure and Registration Physicians (Except Residents). Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country. 4. English Language Proficiency. Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). 5. Must be Board Certified in a recognized medical/surgical specialty.
