Director of the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP)Our CPEP provides mental health assessment/evaluation, for the adult/child experiencing a mental health crisis, in a designated area adjacent to the BGH Emergency Department, with over 4000 visits/year. Services are available 24 hours/day, seven days/week. Over one half of the annual consults are presented through local law enforcement personnel. Four Extended Observation Beds (EOB) are a short-term (up to 72 hours) admission process for the person requiring additional stabilization and evaluation. The Mobile Crisis Outreach component provides adult / children and youth interventions by a team of professionals at the individual´s home/school/work place, etc. Interim visits are provided by this team to the individual waiting his/her first appointment with a mental health provider.Adult PsychiatristOur Psychiatrists carry an inpatient case load of approximately 12, this may vary with the overlap of patient admissions and releases. These 12 patients most likely will be spread across three inpatient units. These units include: a high security unit with 17 beds for stabilization of patients who pose significant risk of harm to self or others due to acute suicidal or homicidal intent, or active psychotic state with violence or risk thereof; a geropsych unit with a strong ECT program for both inpatient and outpatient treatment; and a 22 bed general psych unit which provides stabilization and treatment for patients who are appropriate for a locked, but less secure than the high security unit.Our physicians attend planning meetings and work with interdisciplinary treatment team for each patient, the physician is the captain of the ship in our system. The behavioral health program staff works as a collaborative team and the treatment plans are developed and implemented in a collegial format. Psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, counselors and other disciplines work together to plan and deliver care to patients.United Health Services (UHS) is the regional leader in healthcare. UHS is a community-owned, not-for-profit organization operating 500 beds: Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center (the areas Level II Trauma Center) and Binghamton General Hospital. Teaching opportunities are available with the UHS Family Practice and Internal Medicine residents, Endocrinology, Geriatrics and Sports Medicine fellows, transitional year students, as well as 3rd and 4th year medical students on rotation from Upstate Medical University.
