Maryland Emergency Medicine Network (MEMN) is seeking a Chair, Eastern Shore Emergency Physicians for three facilities within Shore Health System; a regional, not-for-profit network of inpatient and outpatient services.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES Presently the two hospitals, Memorial and Dorchester General, account for 35,000 and 20,000 visits annually. The addition of the Queen Anne“s freestanding emergency center is expected to add significantly to these volumes over the next three to five years. The Maryland Emergency Medicine Network, part of the University of Maryland Medical System, is accountable for the staffing and the overall performance of the emergency centers. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTSResponsibilitiesPersonnel: Ensures appropriate staffing and coordination of two hospital-based emergency departments and a freestanding facility balancing quality, efficiency, and financial responsibility.Participates in recruitment by interviewing and evaluating candidates.Personnel management including evaluating, counseling, hiring, firing.Evaluates physician performance and implements corrective action.Ensures publication of the Emergency Physicians schedule at least a month in advance covering all shifts.Clinical coverage: Continually assesses coverage patterns at all clinical sites considering volume, acuity, seasonality, and revenue. Recommends adjustment in shifts, provider mix, and hours of coverage based on these parameters. Quality/Peer Review:Recommends to the medical staff the criteria for Clinical Privileges for Emergency Department Physicians and nurse practitioners.Actively participates in hospital risk management/peer review process.Reviews all cases involving emergency department care referred by risk management.ED Clinical Operations: Interfaces with nursingWith nurse managers and site directors, develops and updates policies and procedures consistent with regulatory authorities and guided by evidence-based principles.Sets and updates standards for quality and patient safety.Satisfaction ParametersEvaluates current patient/medical staff satisfaction and implements plan for continual improvement.Finances: Collaborates and communicates with MEMN CMO to maintain a balanced professional budget for Eastern Shore Emergency Medicine Physicians, LLC.Additional Activities:Chairs physician meetings on a regular basis (at least four per year) including generation and dissemination of minutes. Represents the emergency department on key hospital committees including MEC, Credentials. Ensures emergency physician representation on all appropriate hospital committees and work groups. Collaborates and maintains excellent working relationships with other departments and the health system administration. Coordinates agenda and report for quarterly meetings with the health system administration in conjunction with MEMN CMO and senior financial analyst. Maintains state-of-the-art clinical programs and equipment including: Pediatric EMTrauma careUltrasoundSTEMIStrokeSepsisMaintains policies/procedures for subspecialty backup with special attention to trauma, hand, neurosurgery, maxillofacial surgery, uninsured patients.Promotes education through, but not limited to: research, clinical updates, QA reviews, and internet-based forums. Works 800-950 clinical hours per year. Board certification in Emergency Medicine. Business/Management degree preferred. Evidence of ongoing leadership/management education; commitment to a physician executive career. Experience: Minimum of five years of active Emergency Medicine clinical practice post residency with reputation as an excellent clinicianMinimum of three years of experience at the Director or Assistant Director level of a moderate- to high-volume emergency departmentExperience with implementation of an EDIS and familiarity with biomedical informatics is desirable
