The University of Central Florida, College of Medicine is seeking applicants from leaders and scholars in medical education to be the Founding Chair of the Department of Medical Education.
The College of Medicine aspires to become an extraordinary research-based institution training physicians of the future who will become exemplary physicians, leaders in medicine, scholars in science, innovators in medical technology and compassionate providers of health care. Preliminary accreditation has been granted and UCFs College of Medicine admitted its first class of 40 students in August of 2009. As part of the Medical City at Lake Nona which is currently under construction, just east of the Orlando International Airport, the College of Medicine takes residence on the UCF Health Sciences Campus among the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, Nemours Children’s Hospital, M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Institute and the VA Medical Center Orlando.The Medical Education Chair will serve as a role model and mentor for a faculty of clinicians and scientists in scholarship and innovation in medical education. The Department provides an opportunity to prospectively study medical education, and the Chair will lead the faculty and foster a scholarly approach in order for the College to be recognized as a national leader in medical education. The Chair will inspire and guide faculty within the department to study the program and its outcomes as it is being developed. In these roles, the Chair will work closely with the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education and the Chair of the Curriculum Committee in the planning, development, management and assessment of the educational program. The Assistant Dean has responsibility for leading, and directing the undergraduate medical education program. The Curriculum Committee has responsibility for recommending and coordinating policies pertaining to the management of the educational program. The Chair of Medical Education has responsibility for leading the faculty to become scholars of medical education and to utilize the medical school and its medical education program as a database for research.The Chair will have an M.D. degree, or equivalent, with a distinguished record of scholarly activities in medical education, an outstanding record of extramural funding, and demonstrated achievement in teaching, mentorship and administration. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellent leadership and interpersonal skills. Applicants should have significant evidence of teaching excellence such as experience as a course or clerkship director, residency or fellowship program director.
