Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
at The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina
University offers a four-year, fully accredited
residency in obstetrics and gynecology. In
addition, we provide quality medical student
education.
Each year 10-15% of our
medical students accept residency positions
in Ob/Gyn. Our Ob/Gyn residency is directed
at producing strong clinicians with the skills,
knowledge base and critical thinking skills
to practice general Ob/Gyn. The Department
of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers specific
expertise in endocrine/infertility, maternal-fetal
medicine, urogynecology, and gynecologic
oncology. Our clinical volumes include about
3200 deliveries per year, 600-650 maternal
transports per year, 200-250 new cases of
cancer per year, and an in-vitro program
doing 80-100 cycles per year.
While
considerable experience and training is found
in the tertiary care nature of our affiliated
hospital, Pitt County Memorial Hospital,
primary care for women remains a central
mission of our educational program. I want
our residents and students to recognize Ob/Gyn
practitioners as the experts in the care
of women. An essential part of that process
is the exposure to enthusiastic, competent,
general practitioners of obstetrics and gynecology.
We have a core group of academic clinicians
to support our mission.
In summary,
the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
offers a strong educational experience in
clinical medicine. We have a good balance
between primary care and tertiary care services.
The medical student and the Ob/Gyn resident
will graduate from our programs confident
in their clinical knowledge and surgical
skills in obstetrics and gynecology.
