Tine Hansen-Turton is executive director of the National Nursing Centers Consortium (NNCC), which advocates for nurse practitioners (NPs) as primary providers of healthcare. The profile of NPs is on the rise because nurse-managed health centers (NMHC), which are run by NPs, would receive increased funding under the healthcare reform proposals in Congress. Nurse-managed health centers provide community-based care to about 2.5 million people.

Nurse practitioners and nursing students would be among the winners if healthcare reform legislation is passed by the U.S. Congress.  President Obama last week renewed efforts to get agreement on reform bills passed last year in the House of Representatives and Senate. Several nursing organizations have endorsed one or both of the bills, or called for ready access to affordable, high-quality healthcare services.

Dear Cindy

After working two decades at a very large teaching hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, as a registered licensed diagnostic radiologic technologist,  I moved to Texas to be closer to my extended family. At the age of 56, I cannot find a full-time job where the continuity of patient care and organization of the hospital or clinic is structured. Seems like everyone is out for the almighty dollar and the patient, which is the reason why we are in the profession, comes second. Healthcare is not the same as it used to be, yet, I hope I can find a job to sustain my lifestyle until I retire.
