High River, Alberta

Located half an hour south of Calgary, High River lies a comfortable distance from the hustle and bustle of one of Alberta's major cities. Situated close enough to allow easy commuting, residents of High River enjoy less expensive real estate, better parking, and a quieter lifestyle than those in the big city.

High River offers an excellent opportunity to experience the province's big-sky landscape close up. The town is located in the scenic Foothills Country, enjoying Rocky Mountain and prairie vistas. It was due to the fact that High River is situated in the heart of prosperous farmland that the town developed as a service center for the agricultural industry in 1904. Lying just north of Black Diamond and the Turner Valley, oil and petroleum services also contribute to the local economy.

Perhaps because of the area's rich natural resources, the greater community of High River is known as Medicine Tree Country – a name that symbolizes the good "medicine" of friendship, pleasant surroundings, and the blessings of good land. Local legend has it that a double cottonwood tree with a common entwined branch once grew in the area providing supernatural powers to those in its vicinity. While the original tree was eventually destroyed during a windstorm many years ago, good land and friendship still abound in the community. Today, High River's Medicine Tree can be seen adorning the town's crest.

While many residents of High River commute into Calgary for shopping, entertainment, and work, a variety of self-sufficient services are available within the community. High River supports a variety of stores, restaurants, and malls. With a population of approximately 9,345 people, small-town charm and Western hospitality come together in this vibrant Albertan community.
