Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan

With an environmentally friendly approach to forestry and logging and stunning and distinctive wilderness areas, Meadow Lake is a progressive community offering a high quality of life.

While logging has long been a mainstay here, it wasn't until the mid-1990s that the local sawmill, Millar Western, began adopting more sustainable forestry practices. The local native tribal council bought part of the company and, together with another sawmill owner, initiated a process to change the management of the forest. The discussions involved input from local residents and, in the end, led to an agreement that would preserve the tree stock. Millar Western has since become the first logging plant in the world to eliminate water pollution from its operations. Instead of sending wastewater into the rivers, it is cleaned, recycled and reused, ensuring that no dioxins and chlorine enter the waterways.

Meadow Lake is located in Northwestern Saskatchewan, an area of immense natural beauty. Its gentle lowlands are dotted by grain and cattle farms. Outside the city is Meadow Lake Provincial Park, an expanse of rough terrain marked by 25 lakes and home to thick forests of spruce, aspen, jackpine, and birch trees. With a rich array of animal and bird species, hunting is one of the most common outdoor activities. The most unique place, though, is the Athabasca Sand Dunes. Located along Lake Athabasca, getting to the dunes is not easy. They are located 200 kilometers (124 miles) beyond the closest road and another 50 kilometers (31 miles) by boat across the lake. But it's definitely worth the trip! Other than their unique beauty, about a dozen plant species found nowhere else in the world grow here.

Meadow Lake also features proud traditions and heritage. The Meadow Lake Stampede and Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Races are two of the biggest events in town. At the same time, several native communities surround Meadow Lake, enriching the local culture. Although it's a small town, Meadow Lake is a gem. Why not consider it for your next move?
